I enjoy Snowshoeing, it’s an excellent way to embrace winter and explore the snow-covered wilderness. If you're new to the activity, don’t worry—snowshoeing is accessible, fun, and requires minimal gear. Plus, there’s no better place to try it out other than Sunshine Ski Resort in Banff, Alberta, a winter wonderland known for its breathtaking scenery.
What Is Snowshoeing?
Snowshoeing involves walking over snow using footwear designed to distribute your weight, preventing you from sinking. I find it’s a great activity for all ages and fitness levels, making it perfect for families, couples, or solo adventurers. Whether you're hiking through forests or climbing gentle slopes, snowshoeing there’s no more peaceful way to connect with nature.
Our Tips for Snowshoeing
Here’s how to begin planning your snowshoeing journey:
1. Gear Up:
You’ll need snowshoes (available for rent or purchase, I love our MSR ones but any ones will get you started), warm winter clothing, and waterproof boots. Add trekking poles for extra balance and a small backpack for your water and snacks. Maybe a few toe warmers if the day is cool.
2. Dress for Success:
Layering is key. I suggest starting with a moisture-wicking base layer (good ol’ Canadian long johns) then add an insulating layer, and nish with a waterproof shell to stay warm and dry. Don’t forget gloves, a hat, and sunglasses to protect against glare from the snow.
3. Start Slow:
Choose a at or gently sloping trail to get used to walking in snowshoes. Take smaller steps than usual and maintain a steady pace to conserve energy.
4. Safety First:
Always check weather conditions and trail maps. Bring a buddy or let someone know your plan. Even for a short outing, carry essentials like a map, compass, or GPS. Know the terrain your spending time in, wintery areas can pose dangers such as avalanches.
