Discover Métis Crossing: A Winter Experience to Remember

This winter (2024/25), we had the chance to visit Métis Crossing near Smoky Lake, Alberta, during our winter multi-day  tours — and it was an unforgettable experience. The combination of rich cultural history and the peaceful winter landscape made it a highlight of our trip.

Step into Métis Culture
Métis Crossing is Alberta's first major Métis cultural interpretive centre, and the warmth of the people there left a lasting impression. We spent time gathered around a crackling fire, listening to stories that painted a vivid picture of Métis traditions. Watching locals craft traditional items (and getting to make our own!) added a personal touch that made the experience feel deeply authentic.

Our days were packed with memorable winter activities:

Snowshoeing Trails: Wandering through snow-covered forests, we learned about the land and its importance to Métis culture. The peaceful surroundings and crisp winter air made it a relaxing and reflective experience.

Traditional Cooking Experiences: After a chilly morning outside, warming up with hearty Métis cuisine was a treat. The fresh bannock and rich stews were incredibly comforting — and delicious! We got to meet the chef, who talked with us at length about connecting with the area and truly made us feel at home.

Wildlife Viewing: While exploring the area, we were able to see their blonde bison, elk, horses, and many animal tracks!

Night Sky Watching: With no city lights to compete with, the stars above Métis Crossing were absolutely mesmerizing. We spent the evenings bundled up outside, marveling at constellations and even catching a glimpse of the northern lights.

Kitchen Parties: We joined a lively kitchen party where we learned Métis-style dances that had everyone laughing and moving in rhythm. It was a fantastic way to connect with the culture in a hands-on way.

Cozy Accommodations: For those exploring on multi-day tours like ours, Métis Crossing offers comfortable accommodations that feel both warm and welcoming. Staying in a traditional-style lodge gave us a sense of connection to the land, and the friendly hospitality made the experience even better.

A Journey Through History: One of the most memorable moments was exploring the exhibits and displays that share the history of the Métis people. We even got to wear capotes (traditional robe-like jackets)! The artifacts, combined with engaging stories from the staff, helped us better understand this important part of Alberta's past.
