Description

You've never tried anything like this before! Go deep with us at Fortress Mountain this winter where our snowcat lift offers exclusive access to hidden terrain in the backcountry of Kananaskis. The trip begins at the base of the former ski area where some of the old buildings are still standing. This area is also home to KPOW, Alberta's only snowcat assisted powder skiing! Once the snowcat drops us off we'll snowshoe through surreal wintery landscapes, towering peaks and pristine powder snow. Hot Chocolate & fresh-baked cookies included. A private winter escape, great for teambuilding groups of up to 40 people or more.

Located only 1 hour from Calgary city limits, ideal for active individuals with previous hiking or snowshoeing experience.

Did you know?

Fortress Mountain has been the film location for many Hollywood films including:

The Revenant
Inception
The Bourne Legacy

...and many more!

Check out our Fortress Mountain guided snowshoe adventure story covered by Andrew Penner in the Calgary Herald on March 8th, 2014!

PURCHASE a White Mountain Adventures toque for $20.00. You can add this your order online or let the office know when booking.

Fortress Mountain is home to an abandoned ski resort, used primarily as a Hollywood filming location, as well as a winter catskiing operation (Fortress plans to reopen as a ski resort in winter 2020). It's remote, rugged location accessible only by private road makes it an ideal location for team retreats. Your group can begin their snowshoe adventure right from the parking area, or board the snowcat for a lift deep into the backcountry.

Optional activities include our avalanche transceiver search game, snow cave or igloo building, or try our multistage challenge race 'Mountain Quest' at the foot of the 10,000ft Fortress itself.

My group is varied in physical ability. Is this program right for them?

We can customize the experience, including route selection/duration. We can build in special features such as igloo building, transceiver search or other games to accommodate lower activity levels.

Is lunch included?

We have several options for lunch, from bagged lunches to catered backcountry BBQ's

Can we drive our own vehicles?

Fortress Mountain Resort access is by private road, with no private vehicles allowed. We are happy to provide return transport from your accommodation, or can meet your group at the Stoney Nakoda Resort. The guide will meet you in the lobby and drive you the remainder of the way to Fortress Mountain  which is approximately 45km south of the resort.

What animals might we see at Fortress?

Fortress Wilderness area is home to a variety of animals, with the chance to spot tracks from lynx, snowshoe hare, pine marten and more. Wolves, bear, cougars and other predators also inhabit the area, but are rarely seen in winter (bears of course hibernate, while other larger predators will be following prey to areas of less snow and easier travel). Our guides always carry bearspray as a precaution.
